I have a Fluval 204 (canister filter) in my 22g (UK) tank but I'm a bit concerned as to how my filter is setup.

I have the water being pumped out of the filter on the rear right of the tank diagonally and pointing to the surface which creates quite a bit of water displacement. B)

The canister intake is on the rear left hand side of the tank (next to a powerhead filter). The powerhead is very near the surface and the extractor for the Fluval runs alongside the powerhead to about 1.5-2" above the gravel.

My query is whether the extractor for the Fluval is too low down?

I'm thinking of raising it to about 3" from the gravel but obviously you can't go back once you've cut the tube!!!

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Pete

Well for me.....I haven't really found any difference in filtration where I put the intake on either my Eheim canister or my Emperor 400. I always read you should have them as far down close to the bottom as possible to get the bigger particles in the water since they don't go to the upper levels. I have, however, cut the tubes to both of these filters to where they are now in upper/middle levels of the tank and honestly I see no difference in filtration.

Now having something at the very surface, such as an overflow box or something of that nature, may effect mechanical filtration but I'm not familiar with any of that.

I don't see any harm in what you're talking about doing, though.

Good plan. This is the type of question that's impossible to answer - every tank is different and it's often a matter of experimentation to see what works best in yours.

I just realized a typo in my reply. I meant to say I see NO difference in filtration but it reads I see NOW difference. Hope you didn't take that as a "I now see a difference".

I've edited it to what I meant to say.

Good luck with whatever you do (or dont do).
