I've read the sticky on wood and I'm still uncertain as to what kind of wood this is. Anybody know?

Thanks Fred. I was afraid it was Mopani wood. Bogwood seems to be pretty rare around here. The search continues.

just out of curiosity why are you looking for bogwood? mopani will have all the positive effects that bog wood does and it sinks more readily, also you'll find it comes in much more interesting and usable shapes.

why do you not want mopani wood? there are no fish or inverts it can harm. indeed plecos love it, its a bit hard in places, but this causes no problems. being a hard wood it also sinks, quite a handy thing if you want it in a fish tank.

I've read that it was too hard for plecos. As I have zero experience with this fish stuff, I have to take peoples word on stuff like this.

It seems like the jury might still be out on this one though.

yep thats what i thought too! its not true though. it may be hard in some places but the plecos just leave that.
truth is maponi if totally safe, indeed prefered by many pleco keepers. apart from one or two comments on this forum, the problem is not mentioned anywhere else. even pleco only forums had never heard of it.

Not true at all.

I can't validate the claim, however the problem of mopani and other hard woods, is related to Panaques who's diet is based mainly on wood. Supposedly, the wood over time wears down the teeth of Panaques which eventually results in them not being able to feed, inturn resulting in starvation. The last time I saw this mentioned was in a UK Catfish Society data sheet on L27 last year.
