I would love to know what my type of fish my monster is, all i know is that i got him when he was about 2" long and he is now about 14" huge and 7" fat

Thats a comet goldfish. I'm surprised he hasn't eaten your other smaller fish, he is pretty large!

I second that, and yes he may well eat the smaller fish. :)

Thanx guys, yes he is a bit on the large side and such a character, likes to be tickled and carries gravel to the top of the tank to spit it at the glass when i havnt looked at him for longer than an hour

re the eating of smaller fish.. we learned the hard way after providing him with a rather expensive meal of 5 baby neon tetras.. we are very careful now and make sure nothing smaller than our large black neons go in with him, not that we can have many fish in the tank as hes so huge and bombs about like an idiot

hes my baby

Its nice to see you love him so much. :)

I really do  i was discussing the other day about maybe taking him to live at my brothers when he has finished his pond as he would have much more room but i got so upset at the thought of not having him here everyday... so we are getting a smaller community tank and just having Harold and a few plecs in the bigger tank so he has more room to *gulp* grow

Something to keep in mind. Goldfish don't like being alone. Is there any way when you get the larger tank you could put at least another goldfish in there to keep him company?

Great looking goldfish btw!! :good:

i definatly will do that.... not a comet though! i dont think 2 of that size would be wise :D i do have another gold fish tiny in comparison to harold but i had to remove him from the community tank as he was being picked on by my evil platy male, hes now in his own 8 gallon tank with lots of plants and having a ball (we are getting a friend for him too)

Harold says thanx for the compliment he thinks hes quite hunky too!

Why has nobody pointed out the obvious yet? Goldfish should be kept in coldwater and not in a tropical set up.....

ok fair enough this i know but.... hes a happy healthy boy and has been with us for 2 and a half years living in a tropical set up, if he ever displays any problems then he will be moved to a coldwater set up pronto just like my other goldfish has been last weekend.

goldfish are temperate and can be happy in any temperature whether coldwater or tropical.

what is the tank temperature? I think their upper range stops at about 76F, so they should be alright in a tropical set up as this is about mid-range for most tropicals (at least the ones i'm aware of), but really the coldwater tank is probably the most advisable. At the higher temperatures the fish's metabolism is increased and they become even bigger waste producers than normal :X . Also, the coldwater will suit him better as fish seem to do best (IMO) if they are kept about midway through their temp. range. Also if the tank gets ich you will want to raise the temperature and then he will likely be out of his range and WILL be under stress.

And just think how many more pretty tropicals you could add to that tank if you took out the 14+ inches of indiscriminately eating goldfish

Ive been watching my tank closely for the past few days and have come to the conclusion that he will be better off in a pond with more room and a friend his own kind or 2, the problem was where to put him as i dont have a garden.. then i remembered that my gran has a pond! she hasnt seen the bottom of it for years and has no idea whats in it so it looks like im going swimming  i love my fish so much has he has such a character and i will be so upset to see him go but its the best thing for him and my comunity tank. I really do want a good pretty tropical tank and realise that with Harold in there bashing about and ferociously attacking every bit of gravel he sees that im just not gonna get it... so Harold will be off to pastures new pending the state of my grans pond. I'ts gonna be a sad day when he leaves as i will probably get very upset but at least hes where i can see him often
