Can u breed Bettas without a heater?

Idolz said:
I think a heater would be cheaper to buy as apposed to buying 200+ mini hats, mittens and scarfs for all of your fry. :p
 Man I bet those were hard to find....in those sizes xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxsmall

I've done it heaterless several times but mainly in the summer. I've found my winter spawns do much better with a little help from a heater. I don't turn it up to 80+ but I've found that keeping it at 78-ish helps a lot.

omg...it is! I posted right after Texaswoman and I completely missed it. Too,too cute SRC! :p

Haha that picture is SO cute!!

I have a related question, just out of pure curiousity -- should growout tanks always be heated or can they be room temperature? (And, if they should be heated, to what temperature? -- I would think slightly lower than the spawning tank, right?)

And what about individually jarred fry-- I know some people use reptile mats and such, but I get the impression most breeders use unheated jars, right?

when i turned on the heater, the male betta fish aggresion increased tremendously. before he was more peaceful

You need to do some more research; you should not only not be breeding fry without a heater, you shouldn't even have bettas without a heater. Also, as everyone mentioned, have you read up on it? Do you realize how many babies you'll have if you suceed? Do you have tanks for all these offspring? Can you afford special foods, medications, etc. for the growing fry? Where/how do you plan on selling all of them? Plus about a billion other questions. I'm finding that with any species - dogs, cats, rabbits, and yes, fish, "backyard breeding" is causing a lot of unnecesarry death and suffering to the animals involved; breeding should be left to the professionals, not any person who can throw a male and a female together.

What kind of bettas do you have anyways? Because if they are VTs, they aren't going to be easy to sell seeing how mass-produced they are right now.

Yes!! simply throwing two fish of the same species but opposite sexes together just to make more babies, makes one simply a multiplier, NOT a breeder. We all need to do research and keep learning and expanding our knowledge.

I do feel any honest person that cares to do the work, continue to learn, make the investment in time AND resources, can bring the professional attitude of breeding responsibly, even it it is doing this in the basement in their spare time with the dedication it takes to truly conduct their "hobby/business" as a professional. Do not leave this to the BIG BOX breeders and "greenhouse" operations in semi tropical locations!

While I agree with everything you bring up here, I do take issue with NOT being able to sell VT in a market "seeing how mass produced they are..." I feel, and know from experience, that any healthy, decent sized, well breed, locally sourced tropical fish will be welcomed at the local pet shop, over those over-produced import fish> I also feel that well cared for locally raised fish have less issues adjusting to local water conditions for the hobbyist.
