well as some maybe aware iam setting up a marine tank. i have added my sand into my tank today and i swear the salt levels have slightly gone up. can this happen or am i goin nuts

Water evaporation :D

its not that i wish it was someting nice and simple
i am goin to do a water change tomoz and see if it drops.
its good that there is no fish in there other wise this could be a nightmare

How much change are we talking about? A couple hundredths of a degree on the sg scale or 1ppt? Thats not earthshattering ;)

The funny thing was that I always thought the ocean was salty because of the sand ^_^...But I still dont know where it comes from -_-

Well, did you wash the sand out before you added it? Its quite possible that there were traces of salt in the sand that raised your salinity. Even if you only washed it a little bit its still possible to raise your salinity by 1ppt. Best way to lower it is to just take out 5% of the water and replace it with RO if its too high.

Did you mix the saltwater in the tank after you placed the sand? As in a new system? I knew folks who knew the tank to be say 20 gallons. Added 20 gallons worth the salt after adding the sand (sand first made the displacement of water an issue) then added water to mix. Lo and behold the water is off the charts in salinity. They forgot to take in consideration of displacement of the sand and rock. Or if this was an established tank then I'd say some salt-creep fell in or the measuring device had bubbles  .

Hi :)
Ocean salt water is created in major part by;

Water evaporates from the ocean,
Wind carries clouds over land,
Rain falls,
Water lands on soil carrying some minerals with it (Salt)
Water ends up in tributaries
Water is sent out 2 seas

Start over
Water evaporates (leaves salt in ocean)
Wind,
Rain,
ect…

So more or less that’s why the ocean water is salty.
