I had already had a 10 gallon set up but i want to upgrade to a 20 gallon. I figured sand might be something good and differnt at the same time. Bc in my 55 i have rocks set up as a sub and the food and waste falls in the crevices and rots. so i figure that wit sand it wont do that. the fish will kick the stuff arouind which will soon go into the filter. but now im havin doughts with the play sand. i feel as though the water can become brackish or diseased ridden. and if this works for my 20 im gonna do it for my 55. so can someone plz give me advice.

i read somwhere about using childrens play pen sand, but you have to make sure it doesn't have any additives or chemicals

I've heard that play sand is a good substrate. You have to wash it first of course, but its good.

Just wondering, how are those ID sharks doing? I'm thinking of getting some.

there awesome. but i regret buyin them 3 years ago. i used them as starter fish. and i kept them in a 20 gallon for a year which really stunted there groth. There 8 inches now and there only gunna get bigger so ur guna need a big tank. my cousin had ones that were a foot and a half long in a 110 gallon. that was quite a sight. You also have to worry about them because they can get ich and other diseases very easily. and they also have quite an appetite. for the first year they eat of the bottom and eat the occasional flakes. now i feed them a whole cube of blood worms or tubiflex worms each. there really kool though. you also dont want to get aggresive tank mates. u want mellow ones cuz if there not they will attack the sharks.

how do u wash it
it said on the bag it was already washed and screened
when i did it though the water did get cloudy
but i put some de-cloudy stuff in there and now its crystal clear

Oh, I would love for my aquarium to have a sand bottom! It is a 10 gallon with platies, neons, and guppies. I dunno, would if that combo work though.

would what work. sand looks really good though i like it better then river pebles. it also looks awesome wit slate

Try to find a brand of play sand that contains more grained sand and less muddy fine particles. I found one and this sand absolutely doesn't get disturbed even when I poke my finger all over the place. This is supposed to be the biggest cons of having sand as the substrate but if you get the right kind, you don't need to deal with this issue!

yeah yeah idk its kind of kool cuz like the sand is always changin and it looks really kool. i have @ waterfall filter poundin on it so its alway moving and changin its shape

Play sand is perfectly fine for aquarium use.

To wash it place it in a bucket and run a showerhead through it till the water runs clear. When putting it in the tank use a pint glass (or similar), lower the glass to the bottom of the tank and pour it out.

My water was clear after 30 minutes with no use of additives.
