I'm looking at my new Neon Tetras tonight, and counting them, and I notice one swimming oddly. Then I realize that he has no caudal fin! There is now a pinkish stump where his tail fin should be. They only fish in this tank are 7 other Neons. I have a small Whisper internal (hang on inside) filter, thats rated for 2-5 gallons, and because these Neons are so small, I have the water level quite low. I had the filter turned full bore, but after having a different Neon sucked up and killed by the intake, I turned it down as far as it would go. I also have a few snails in the tank. The Neon is still swimming, but it looks as if its in pain. Should I euthanize it or wait it out? I don't want it to be in pain. Please help, ASAP!

Fins do heal, but if the damage is too severe, it may get infected and things will go from bad to worse. When you say "new", do you mean you have just bought them? If so, add the stress of a new environment and how sensitive neons can be, and there's a slim chance of him making it.

Sounds like that won't grow back, but if it seems healthy enough otherwise, help it out  My dad had an african cichlid that lived without a tail, he got along pretty well without it. Could the other neons be bullying this one? I don't see how it could have lost it's tail

I mean new as in less than 2 weeks old. I got them about a week and a half ago, and no, he doesn't seem to be bullied, they all kind of group together, but its like someone cut off his tail. He seems to have a hard time swimming now...Should I euthanize? :byebye:

Do you have any other fish there which could have possibly bitten it? Or any objects which could have done that, maybe he got stuck in the filter?

The only living organisms (that are visible to the naked eye, anyway) are 6 other Neons besides the affected one, and some snails. It may have been caught in the filter, but its not very powerful.
