I'm looking at my new Neon Tetras tonight, and counting them, and I notice one swimming oddly. Then I realize that he has no caudal fin! There is now a pinkish stump where his tail fin should be. They only fish in this tank are 7 other Neons. I have a small Whisper internal (hang on inside) filter, thats rated for 2-5 gallons, and because these Neons are so small, I have the water level quite low. I had the filter turned full bore, but after having a different Neon sucked up and killed by the intake, I turned it down as far as it would go. I also have a few snails in the tank. The Neon is still swimming, but it looks as if its in pain. Should I euthanize it or wait it out? I don't want it to be in pain. Please help, ASAP!

If it's in pain I would, you might need to use anti internal bacteria med with the pinky stubb, add a teaspoon of salt to the tank, neons can take small doses of salt.

Given good water conditions and some time to heal it should be ok....Some Melafix would help it a little but it will grow back on its own....I wouldnt euthanize it....fins damage is a common thing and while it might look like its in pain it can handle it.

Sorry for your loss.

Sorry my mistake, thats not good then.

Do you have a breeding net/cage on hand....put him in that and see how it goes...I would rather give it a chance at recovery than killing him....I dont have much experience with keeping neons but ive had cichlids and barbs loose their entire caudal fin and are still with me today.
