If I have a tank approx 15g and seperated it in two, would it be ok to have a betta on one side and platties on the other? If so how many platties would be ok?
Hugs,
P.

If you can get a section with holes in it, as the filter will be working on one side more than the other if you no what i mean.

15/2= 7.5 gallons. So, about 2-3..maybe 4 platies if I'm correct (2inches of fish to one gallon). (BTW, you should so get a dwarf platy, they are sooo cute.) I think it would be fine. Good luck with that!

Will you be dividing it roughly in half ? I'm not certain of the adult size of a platy, but you take the amount of room they'll have and divide that by the adult size of a platy, and that's how many you can have.

So .... if you're giving them 7.5 gallons of space (half of 15 gallon tank) and the adult size of a platy is 2 inches (I'm guessing, not sure if it's even close) then you can have:

7.5 gallons / 2 inches = 4 <--- well since you can't have 3.78923 fish in a tank.

Check on the adult size of a platy and go from there, hope this helps.

Also, make sure whatever you divide the tank with has sufficient holes to allow the water to circulate well, unless you're planning on running a filter on both sides. Remember also that bettas don't like a lot of current, so if you're running 1 filter only, put it on the platies side. And one last thing ..... if the divider is clear, make sure the betta doesn't wear himself out flaring at the platies.

I've also heard that a betta *might* be ok in a community tank with platies. That's a big MIGHT. You can watch his reaction through the divider and see how it goes, and then remove the divider if you decide it looks safe enough to leave them together. Just always be ready to put the divider back in at a moment's notice in case something does happen.

OK how would a betta get along with harlequins? Sorry to be awkward. It's just that I'm trying to rearrange my tanks so I can have more platties since the stressing of my single female from the single male. I could move the harlequins out of the community tank into a tank shared with a betta and the platties into the community with another female or two. Would they still need to be seperated or would they be fine together? I'm very sure the tetras wouldn't work as they nip and the endlers are too colourful and have long tails. Really I don't want to limit any fishes full use of a tank if it can be avoided. Just want whats best.

P.

Your 15gal is already pretty stocked, dividing it would not leave your current fish with enough space- you would be alot better off buying a 2gal tank for a betta and you can find 2gal tanks pretty cheap.

 I think you misunderstand me. I meant a different tank of similar size, not the current one. With the recent problem with my female platty (Now in thr 55g alone) I wanted to try and rearrange things a bit. So there's less fish in that tank and enough platties together to stop stress problems again. The betta came into it because my daughter keeps begging me for one. If it would be happy to be housed with the 4 harlequins then the platties could be in the current tank and an extra female added.
Does that make better sense now?

P.

harlequins are very very placid fish and should present no threat to your betta.
however, the filtration and water movement might. as you probably know, bettas do not fair well in tanks with strong water movements. they prefer quiet, still waters, so you will need to keep the filtration down to a minimum.
(hey guys, please tell me if i'm talking rubbish)

No I think you are right in saying that. I know my current smallest tank has quite a current at the surface, but I do have the outlet tube above the surface so....
The tank I'm hoping for is the same size I believe so would happily house 4 harliquins and a betta. Then my female can go home to the community with a fellow female to stop that naughty male being a stress causer.
Ok thanks very much. Been helpful. Once the tank is in my possession I can get it cycled and will post pics once it's all sorted and stocked.
Hugs,
P.
P.S:If anyone has any other thoughts, always interested to hear. :)
