Is there anything stopping me using a pump to get the bulk of the water from a bucket on the floor into the tank?? as ime getting fed up of spilling water everywhere??

thats cool then. just fort ide check first. i guess its the same principle as a sump pumping water back to a tank.

I tried using my fluval 2 internal filter that i have spare but i dont think it was no where powerfull enough as it pumped water abouty 1/4 way up the pipe and that was it.

How many LPH should i want the pump to have do you rekon?? its gotta pump the water about 3ft from the floor to the top of the tank??

Heh, yeah the motors/pumps in those canister filters are designed for flowrate, not pressure. Pushing water vertically requires a pump that's made for pressure, or at least partly made for pressure. 3' you say? Something like a maxijet 1200 would prolly do it in a time frame that's not agonizingly slow :)

I use a MJ 1200. I can push the water up to 5' so far (haven't tried higher)

I use a pump to pump it out to. Run a hose from the tank to the sink. :D

Well i brought a pump from my LFS. Its no special make and only cost £11.50 and quoted to pump upto 1.3m high. i brough a lenght of pond pipe and 2 90 degree elbows.

And it works realy well ime pleased with how quick it pumps the water upto the tank. it took about 3 mins to pump 3 gallons.

Only problem being ime left with about 10mm of water in the bottom of the container so prob only 1 litre or 2 at the maximum. would this be on to leave in and mix with the new water for the next water change??
