recentlely i went to my local pet store, and i was told by the owner that i can put gold fish in with tropical fish, but can anyone tell me if this is right. and if so is there any gold / tropical, that just should not be mixed. :dunno:

Why do it anyway? You need a 20 gallon for a goldfish, why bother buying bigger so you can have a few smaller fish? I believer there is something in a goldfishs slime coat that is toxic to tropical fish, although if you really wanted to you could probably put in a hillstream loach or some WCMMs.

OohFeeshy is correct.
the slime coat of a goldfish has toxins that
are often deadly to most tropical fish.

although goldfish can tollerate the temps of tropical water
it increases their metabolisum and therfor increases the
amount of waste they produce.

IMHO don't risk it.

Goldfish produce a ton of waste, have a toxic slime coat, and do better in colder temps. They also have a tendancy to nip fins and eat smaller fish once they get big enough. And you could have, what, one goldie and a few tropicals in a massive tank as opposed to lots of tropicals.

I don't suggest it at all.

If you want a goldfish, I would only have 1 goldfish as they end up needing such big tanks and live so long that most fish owners can't accomodate many unless they have a pond. If you would rather have several tropicals in a smaller tank, I bet the folks on the tropical board would have some great suggestions.

would just like to thank everyone who gave me advice on the topic i posted it was very informative.

what everyone said is probably right but I've got a 200L/50 gallon tank with both tropical and goldfish in it. I havn't had any problems with either. in fact, this is the first time my goldfish havn't died, they used to be constantly dying, now they're fine. they grow twice as fast though. I've noticed it and someone told me that you put them in tropical water if you want them to grow. So yeah. everyone tells me that I'm cruel and stupid and all of that and that my tanks cramped, which it probably is. but I keep it clean and have a very efficient power flow filter and all my fishies are happy and growing.
so that's my input. hope it helps you make up your mind

I just read your question properly and have more to say
don't put them with Red devil (a cichlid) they're really evil. and I have problems with my golden algae eaters sucking on the goldies coz the goldies are big and slow and the algae eaters are big and fast.
I can't put neons with my goldies coz they eat them but my phantom tetras or anything bigger than their mouths are fine and I think they're only really interested in eating fish if they're not fed enough. I feed my fish at least once a day to keep them from tempting themselfves.
Yep. thats it. hope that helps also.
