How aggressive really are crayfish/crawfish? Can they be kept with regular tropical fish without much violence? SPecifically with tetras, corys, plecos, loaches?

I'd say they are too aggressive for those fish. They will pinch them and you will eventually end up returning it or buying it another tank. This is what I read I wouldn't base completely off this. I wouldn't do it but the choice is yours.

The thing is, Ive read their aggression is overrated, and they are actually too slow to really hurt much of anything healthy

Ok that's just based on what I've read so it's all up to you. I personally wouldn't put one into my community tank.

They do eat fish, so like Man of fish I wouldn't put one in with any of mine.

well if thats the case, are there any other inverts worth looking into?

theres some beautiful shrimp species available for freshwater. Cherry shrimp, glass shrimp, crystal red shrimp and if you don't live in Australia (our quarantine rules are STRICT  ), theres a lot of shrimp from Indonesia/Malaysia you can probably aquire online.
