Hi,

I currently have a 10 gallon where all the caridina shrimp died due to unknown reasons, but they al died rather quickly and in the hours leading to the death they were sluggish and turning orange. I suspect this is a bacterial infection, and as such we will likely reset the tank. However, we have some fish in this tank that are doing fine, so we were wondering whether it is safe to move these fish to another caridina tank without risk of infecting the shrimp in this tank. If not, is there something I can do instead of transferring?

Thanks.

Without knowing what killed the shrimp, it's hard to say but as a general rule, most fish diseases do not infect fish and vice versa. So if the shrimp did die from a shrimp disease, the fish are unlikely to transfer it to another tank unless you transfer contaminated water with the fish.

Microsporidian infections can infect fish and shrimp but causes the muscle tissue to turn cream/ white. It kills shrimp and fish over a period of a month or so and is not sudden death.

If the shrimp all died on the same day, it might have been a water quality issue or poisoning (maybe from a medication).

If the fish have been in the tank without anything else for a month, they should be safe to scoop out and transfer over to another tank. Try to avoid dripping water into the other tank if it has shrimp in.

So should I just not do acclimation? The water params should be pretty similar as they are both caridina tanks, so I think I will do that. Thanks Colin.
