Can anyone recommend a water testing kit - I have recently visited several acquarium supplies shops however, the assistants did not seem to know what they were talking about or gave very conflicting views about testing and not testing !

Any help would be really appreciated ! Thanx ! :p

Hi Tippy

There are many good test kits on the market. You should have a test kit, so that you know what is going on in you tank. If you do not understand the results, just post them here and we will interpret them for you.

The easiest to use are the dip strips, that have 5 tests on them.

The kind of test kit you go for is a matter of personal choice. It depends what you want from it and how detailed an anylysis you need from it. Most beginners in the hobby need to bother about two important factors. Ammonia levels and Nitrate/nitrite levels. A dip method can be easily read and will give a pretty accurate reading, the downside is that it can prove expensive. So dipsticks give you more information than you need. You don't say how long you have been fish keeping, but I'm going to assume that you are relatively new because you have posted your qestion in the beginners. So for you what I would recommend is a liquid test kit for the specific toxin you are looking for. ie. You can purchase an "Easy Test" liquid test kit for Ammonia only from Interpet. You can do the same for Nitrates and Ph and so on and so forth as you gain experience. Each kit will test around 100 times before you need to renew. It is easy to use also. It's fool proof with it's own colour coded chart. I used them when I first started and now I just have the Hagan Laboratory Kit that tests for everything. Too much really. I would say that the Interpet test kits were very good and very accurate and good value for money. However that's only my personal opinion. :D
