Can Anyone Reccomend A Good Algae Scraper Thing?

I always use the white scourers that usually come with a sponge. These are just normal household washing up ones, given a really good wash out before use. Pack of 6 for about £1
I have one of those long handled tank scrapers which are useless and I use an elastic band to attach a piece of the scourer to it. [I cut off some of the sponge as it's a bit thick].
It must be the white scourer though as they don't scratch. The green one's might. :good:

btw i said ottos because they are well cool  and i like them more than scrapers just my opinion thogh

We just use green scourer washing up sponges too. I get them from ASDA, they are the cheapo ones, something like 16p for a pack of 4 or 6 - I throw them out after I've used them.

They don't fall to bits, but the green bit is not very scratchy - however this is a plus because it means they don't damage anything - they wouldn't damage the glass I don't think but I worry about using them where the sealant is if they are too scratchy.

I bet they don't clean your pans very well, but they work well on your tanks.

Incidentally, the white ones are non-stick pan cleaners and are more expensive.

I have an algae scrubbing brush and one on a stick. Both work well but the one you hold in your hand directly works the best. Magnetic algae cleaners work great too but have the limitation of only getting the glass in the front and sides, depending on the space you have there.

The white ones are more expensive than the green, but we're talking about £1 ish for 6, and they last for ages. Good on pans as well [probably best to not use the same one though!] :D

For the glass surfaces I use one of the magnetic ones and it is great, during a partial I use a scotchbright disposable (very thin) on the silicone and other surfaces, works good. Scott

I use a credit card. Works well. Much better than the normal use those things are put to.

use exactly the same ones...... and yes they are a bit of a pain on your pans

The problem with using 'normal' green pan scourers is that nearly all of them contain at least some detergent. If you have a local Halfords or any kind of shop where you can buy car accessories, try a windscreen scraper. But be careful to avoid the sealant when you're scraping away.

Use a window cleaning blade. They are proper razor blades. You can buy a handle to hold them to make it easier if it helps. You can buy blades online at

http://www.wintecs.co.uk

I reccomend the mini scraper at 60p ish and then scraper blades to fit it.

I use these all the time. One scrape down and all algea will be gone from glass. They don.t scratch as they are designed for the job of scraping off glass. I know this as I am a window cleaner and use them all the time for this as well and have never had one scratch glass. If they did I wouldn't use them on my fish tank.

If cleaning a bowed tank they you will have to clean side to side so the blade stays flat on the glass

Cut out the middleman and pay the cash straight to the fish  saves a trip to the LFS I guess!

I use one of the dish brush things designed to have washing up liquid poured into the handle, works really well, and the scruber bit can be changed when it's worn out.

I bought 5 otos but having cleaned up all the bogwood they've said s*d it to the stuff on the glass
