also how do you tell the difference between male and female? my two have been acting strange lately. they normally stay at the top of the tank but one is staying in the submarine and the other is back and forth to it. they have evicted the pleco from in there which amazed me!!

Have I not answered this before somewhere
They are
Epiplatys dageti Monroviae, your picture is of a male.

Males have the yellow/orange throat and elongated finnage the bottom rays of the caudal extrudes to a point
females are slightly lighter in colour, smaller and have rounded finnage.
The pic below, although B&W shows clearly the difference in the sexes.

you answered last time that it was a killifish but never gave a 'name' for it :)

many many thanks. seems i have two males then!

any idea why one has taken to hiding in the plecs home?

Male killifish are notorious to having a low tolerance to each other even more so if there are females present.
One may be bullying the other.

so buying two females wouldnt solve the bullying (one each kinda thing?)

would it be best to split them up? the one in hiding is looking terribly unhappy today.

would it be ok in a tank with 2 week old platy fry or is it likely to eat them? its the only other tank i have. other than keeping one in a breeders net (which wouldnt be fair on the fish) its my only option other than taking one back to the shop. but i dont think they accept 'returns' over here.

First off yes definately split the males up
Secondly depends how small the platy fry are, In my experience Ep. dageti dont really cannibalise their own fry, I usually can leave the fry in with the adults with this species and they are fine, but thats not to say that they wont will take the odd one here and there. The options are yours, but do split the males.
