Hi

Ive recently changed my tank and transferred my remaining two clown loaches to the tank. I have since gone out and brought 2 King Tiger Pleco's, 2 Pictus, and 2 Neolamp. Bricardis.

After about 2-3 weeks of the tank being set up i got white spot and lost both clown loaches after treating the tank for 3 weeks. It seemed to have gone but it has since returned on my pictus. Ive read that u can add 1 teaspoon of de-iodsed salt per 4 litres the water instead of treatment as it works better for the pictus. But im a bit worried as to whether it would affect the other fish.

Can anyone give me some advice.

Thanx :)

Dede, the salt treatment is one that I practice. Some even recommend this as typical water treatment. Tetras, especially neons are the ones most sensitive to this treatment. They don't like salt.

You can buy aquarim salt at your lfs pretty cheap. About a buck for a pound.
I dose one tablespoon for five gallons. Then you have to turn temp up gradually to about 80 degrees for a couple days.

You either have ich, or a fungus. The salt should ward off the ich. If it is a fungus, you may have to medicate.

Personally I favour medications and have had very good results in treating for ich. Use protoacide(sp?), if your in the uk try Protozin or Myaxzin but there are loads of products out there.

Many people do swear by using salt but when I tried it it devastated my plants ;)

As GL says raise the temp - this will spead up the ich cycle.

But act quickly

Good luck

:)

Hi ya

Thanx for the advice.

Yeah i am in the U.K. I did a water change of about 10-20% and then treated it with Interpet's Aquarium treatment no.6 Anti-white spot on Sunday night. They recommend not to treat them again until 7 days later and to do another water change before treating again. Do u think adding the salt will interfere with that treatment?

Why do i keep getting it? I treated it three times last time, one being after it seemed to have cleared up like they suggest. Yet its been about 3 weeks since then and its back. Ive never suffered with it before just since ive had this new tank!! :S

clowns are very susceptable to ich

The pathogen can only be killed when its in its free swimming state, not while its on the fish or in a cyste.

The medication I use is apllied on days 1, 3 and 5. Though now you have started with this one then finish the course.

I would raise the temp to arround 29C this will make your medication more effective.

Salt should not interfer with the treatment tough I'm not familiar your product - see if it mentions it on the instructions

Thanx

Ill try ur advice and hope the teatment works ill keep ya posted!!

:)

There are still two trains of thought to the Ich problem... I seem to think that it is always around but only becomes a problem when fish are stressed and more susceptable. Before the puffer incident yesterday (see oddballs section) they had Ich twice, both times when acclimatising. I used Protozin both times, increasing airation and temperature and they only really got over it when they 'settled' in their last tank. :)

Silly question Dede, did you remove your filter/carbon? If you have a filter with carbon, it will strip the meds from the water before it can do any good.

Yeah i did remove my carbon out of my fillter thanx.

What sort of salt is it i need to buy? I read it should be non-iodised?? Whatever that is!! (excuse me for being think!! :fun: )

Ta :)

prefferably, you'd get salt with nothing but NaCl. Just salt. I, however, have used salt with calcium silicate in it without any trouble. Most poeple think idiodine is bad for the fish, some think the levels of iodine are negligible. The thing to REALLY avoid is prussaic acid. It's the "gas" of the "gas chambers" of the holocaust, literally. It'll wipe out all of your fish.

So still acting thick here!! :D Can i use ordinary table salt then!!

I wouldn't - just in case ;)

You should be able to get a big bag of aquarium salt from your lfs - I got one for ponds which worked out very cheap :)
