Hi,

I'm currently on the look out for a larger tank and there is a possibility that it could be a Jewel.

Can the internal box filter they have installed be removed?

I'd like to use an external filter and the internal box filter looks like it takes up alot of volume.

yes you can remove it.there was a thread approx 2 or 3 pages ago about removing the filter box

What tank are you looking to get?
The filters in the juwel tanks can be removed by using a sharp knife and sliding behind the filter.
They are only held by approx. 4 blobs or so of silicone.HTH.
Can I just say though......If you are buying a juwel and planning to remove the filter.....you may be better off buying a straight glass tank, eheim filters(that you can get with heaters inside) and getting/building a cabinet to fit.
Might work out cheaper. :)

just an addition to that info,

if you are removing it its best to heat the knife first, it should then just slide through the silicone.

its a real pain to remove the remains of the silicone from the glass though and depending on the size of the tank there could be upto eight blobs of silicone to remove

I removed mine a few weeks ago. Just use a Stanley Knive and "saw" through the silicone. It was job done in 2 minutes.
The remains of the silicone on the glass, I removed with a (fishtank dedicated) scourer.

Two ticks and presto Juwel filter gone !

Ps: mine was a Vision 180 using a compact H filter.
