hi
I have heard of people using calcium plus in an external filter (with all other media removed) as a 'cheap' version of a calcium reactor. Or at least a way way of keeping ph up and calcium levels up...any thoughts?

Not sure mate. I'd assume that the high pH and alkalinity of saltwater wouldn't dissolve the Calcium Plus, that's why CO2 is used to acidify the water in CO2 reactors, thus dissolving the calcium and boosting levels.

I'm no expert though, perhaps one will clear it up for us ;) .

HI Andyk.....I'm assuming this is for a marine tank. I'm not too familiar with calcium plus but I would assume that it is a solid type of calcium that you would put in your external filter. I don't think that this would work very well. Getting a solid form of calcium to dissolve is best served by keeping an aragonite based substrate in your aquarium.

The tried and true ways of supplementing your aquarium with calcium include:
1) calcium reactor..initially expensive and perhaps a pain to setup, but provides very good calcium levels in the aquarium
2) liquid calcium (calcium chloride)....but..a quick fix and overtime chloride ions can build up (acidic) worsening pH/alkalinity
3) 2 part calcium buffers...work well, but, expensive overtime
4) dripping Kalkwasser....can be tedious, messy, but..long term great way to support calcium, can precipitate out unwanted phosphates

If you give me a link to calcium plus, maybe I can help out a bit more with this...also aquarium size, etc. SH
