im thinking about getting a hamster or something like that and was wondering what size cage is best. i dont want it too small because then i fell like they are trapped. i want something large. could i see some pics of you guyses cages that have small animals in them to get an idea of sizes? thanks

When i had hamster, i had tall rather than long cages at the time which had many levels, the minimum length and width for a hamster cage i'd recommend is 14inches long by 12inches wide. If you can go for a longer cage that would be much better though, at the moment i have pet rats and have them in a 2.5ft long by 1.5ft wide and 3ft high cage.
Syrian hamsters spend a great deal of their time asleep, and are only really active at night, you need to take them out every day to help excercise them, bond with them and help give them a more stimulating environment  . Syrian hamsters are solitary and territorial animals, so you should only have one per cage, while other types of hamsters like russian dwarf hamsters are a lot more sociable and can be kept in groups  .

dont know about hamsters however we had a lovely rat we kept it in a 1meter x .5 meter cage at night, most of time when we were in we just used to let it run around, it never tried to escape or anything, actually used to come and sit with us on the couch. sadly not with us anymore :rip: frankie

the only problem is that i have 2 cats and i want a big enough cage that it wont have to come out and be attacked by my cats. i really like dwarf hamster, i think they are chinese. i saw 2 sleeping together at the pet store and they just stole my heart

I would say that whatever you choose, the bigger the better. In fact, the biggest you have space for and can afford.
Stay completely away from those tube contraptions. They are a nightmare for many reasons.
Just make sure the bars (if there are any) are narrow enough so that hammie can't escape.
Also very important, is enough space in the cage for a hammie friendly wheel such as the "wodent" (the medium sized one). Ones that come with a cage can generally be binned straight away.
Many people go for "bin cages" - personally I think they'are great as long as they're big with lots of toys. (Very safe with cats and extremely hard to knock over).
have a goole and I'm sure you'll find some info on that.
Those are the most important aspects I think :good:

A 10 gallon aquarium with a screen lid seems to work. My sister did it and no harm came of it. She put aspen, so toobs, and a little wooden house with a treat box off of the second floor. She also had a hamster wheel. Fluffy loved it... till he died 4 years later.
