Well after yrs of searching I finally got one yesterday

Its lovely, about 18 inch long and so cute.

I;ve long admired Mikailas pictures of hers and his head is the same, just like a sock puppet!!

what has surprised me is its so active and its eaten some bloodworm already which I;m happy with. I shall feed it on better food from now on

what do you feed yours?

Simon

WE NEED PICS! So glad you found one after so long! Sounds like it is still young. Mine eat anything and everything made of meat. Mine stayed on a diet of worms and jumbo shrimp for a long time. Then kinda got annoyed by the $3.25 for 2 dozen worms which doesn't hold out for very long. Figure we could get fancier if I was going to spend that much on food, when one can easily take a dozen worms in a week. Now as adult I buy fish from the supermarket. Frozen or fresh. What ever works for you. Mine have eaten catfish, talapia, smelt, haddock, salmon, and shrimp. That I can remember. Just cut it up into long thin strips and they have no problem eating it. Treats are whatever I throw in the tank usually something not considered "healthy". Cooked chicken, beef, pork, calamari, cheese. They happily eat it all. The younger they are the more likely they are to eat things, they seem to have a higher food drive. Once mine ate some sauteed mushrooms when they were little ^_^ . They would probably be too lazy to eat something like that currently. They use to tear apart worms, but now the fat adults are very particular on their worms. They need to be torn in half cuz they will only eat them from the injured end.

I suggest starting to feed when the lights are out it is more likely to eat a good meal that way. They vary in character. My male has little problem eating during the day or with being gently handled. Female definitely prefers the night and freaks out pretty easy.

Make sure your lid is tight with no gaps, they are expert escapers.

They are from a little place in south america, i'll give you a clue,<me :shifty: >

They can live with small fish but an air of caution is needed as they eat small fish, not actually being a fish themselves, Caecilians are limbless amphibians, beautiful things and soooo different from the norm,They mostly live hidden in the ground in the wild

Cant wait to see pics :good:
Ive always liked them since i saw Mikailas
How big do they get? what tank size do they need?

you got that last bit right Mikaila

Just went to get something out the car and he was on the path having got out the tank and under the garage door and down the path, he's full of dust but still alive, however he doesn;t look to good, hes back in the tank and fingers crossed he;ll recover!! I;m so cheesed off the poor fella

#92### thats quite the escape attempt!! Hope he is okay :good:

well hes looking ok, he must have shed a layer of mucus skin or something as hes looking shiny and new again and no balance issues or cuts on him

fingers crossed

Jesh si  didnt that same thing happen way back with the channa?

reminds me of that little fish cartoon, nemo maybe you should film the next instalment of the film at yours...so what do they do under the garage door,or press a button n wait for the door to lift open, then wizzz out in a tank like a scene from the A-team

yeah if your lid does not fit tightly you need to fix it ASAP. Doesn't mater what you use, plexiglass, mosquito screening, tape, ect. My lid is taped all the way along the back side to stop escape, their q-tank was a bin with mosquito screening duct-taped over the top. I've had 3 incidents though. Twice female bailed out during a water change and then she managed to get up in the light fixture one night. Was pure luck that I heard weird noise at 1am. Cuz those are my high powered plant lights and they would of cooked her fast come morning.

As you probably saw they can go quite a distance out of the tank. My tank sits on smooth tile and luckily they seem to move very poorly on it. They just wiggle but don't really go anywhere.

He should settle down after a while. Give him lots of hidey places and food till he does. These guys may be blind they do however keep track of their surroundings. Mine know where things are in the tank and if you move them they can become quiet alarmed, especially if its their hidey spots. He probably feels pretty insecure in a new tank and is going to be escape prone till he settles in.

If it was just a quick little outside adventure he should be fine with some TLC.

hes spot on recovered far better than the channa did after their escape ( your right Neil). I;ve even got a lottle picture will get it up later!! lol

I;ve secured teh lid better now, this should be enough, I;ve lowered water level a little as well

Yeah the good thing with caec is they can survive out of water...
