Hello all,

Just a quick question. What is the salt tolerance of a Chinese algae eater? I've had mine for a couple of years and I'm thinking of moving him into a 30g mildly-brackish with my GSP (provided they get on alright.)

Thanks.

they can tolerate small amounts of salt but I have never tried them in a brackish tank. I suppose it depends on how brackish your tank is. Half strength seawater and I would say forget it.
1/4 strength seawater might be tolerated.
1/10 seawater should be fine.

they can survive a high ph but they are a freshwater fish at the end of the day so brackish is out of the question. i would not even risk it myself :good:

To any true freshwater fish, salt is a pollutant. Some may tolerate it better then others, but whatever, the fishes system is having to work harder in order to keep it's electrolyte levels normal, this puts great strain on the kidney in particular leading to it's early failure and death of the fish.
