why do all stands and cabinets have the top panel that extends out further than the sides of the cupboard as shown in the pic? what is the point of this?

also does it serve some purpose in spreading the weight out and not causing the top to sink in the middle????

I don't have an answer, but I have a follow-up question to this topic. All the fish cabinets that I've been seeing have the doors that open but don't have any shelving inside. I spent almost a week on mine adding some more coats of paint and a middle and bottom shelf which gives me a lot more storage area. The stand also was made so that only one door opened and the other was a false front, so of course I had to correct that and make it an actual 2 door cabinet.

Total cost to do this was about $5.00 for the hinges as I had the extra lumber and paint laying around anyways.

So, why no shelves or cubbyholes inside most fish cabinets?

I've never seen a stand like that except in pics. Where are you located? Most, if not all, of the stands available in the US are full size. Maybe it's merely for asthetic reasons. :dunno:

Probably so you can fit your canister filter inside the cabinet.
