Does anyone own any of these? I want to get 6 for my 20g but I live in Canada so they're super hard to find. If anyone has any leads that would be great...

But that's not why I'm posting!! How easy are they to keep? Are they very sensitive/die easily? I will probably have to import from the states and don't want to pay a bunch of money on them for them to die because they aren't very hardy...

Thanks :good:

They're not difficult, not picky, but they won't do well if you don't look after them, as with all fish.. OldMan47 keeps all three species of dwarf Cory, I think.

Of course I will look after them to the best of my abilities.

I heard of someone who ordered 50 from the states (corysRus) and most died within a few weeks. This is my major concern.

Has mentioned above :)
Plus just the same has any dwarf cories, dependant on how good the stock is to begin with has quite a few are wild caught,i've never had any problems keeping them getting them from lfs.
Keep good water quality, and acclimatise them well when you receive them will help to keep well & healthy.

The acclimation process I assume you refer to is: float the fish in the bag at the top of the tank for 15 minutes, then add 1 cup of water from the tank every five minutes to the bag, and continue until the bag is full of water (but still able to float), then empty and discard half the water, and repeat until the bag is full a second time. Then net the fish and release, discard all water from bag.

(just a newbie trying to confirm things...) :good:

I would be more reassured getting them from an LFS as I could check them out, see other tanks and their conditions, etc....

BUT! I live in a crappy small town (and in Canada to boot) that has very limited stock. The only cory sold here is pepper.

Also, harlequin, I noticed you have dwarf gouramis!! I want to get one for my 20g but am worried about the whole disease thing with them. I'll be getting it from petsmart, and knowing large pet stores the tanks aren't very well taken care of... always see dead fish in their tanks. Should I just not risk it? I don't want one dwarf gourami destroying my tank with its disease-ness.

I live in a crappy small town just south of Canada, so I feel your pain. We just discovered a wonderful LFS in the town close to our lake cabin that we just opened up, so we're very happy with that. I think we can probably give him a call before we travel there each time and he'll be happy to stock what we want.

As for dwarf gouramis, it seems that whatever it is that afflicts them doesn't spread to any other fish. I had 5 of them that all died from that disease, but no other fish were affected. Very sad, though, because those were the neatest fish I had.

Good luck!

Find out what water they are coming from, if it is similar to yours, that should work.

I prefer to acclimatise by using the drip method as it takes longer and the water changes are more gradual. Like above, but pour the fish and water into a bucket with a small heater, and drip tank water into it with an airline at a rate of 1 drop/2-10 seconds. It takes hours, but I find it helps fish to calm down after the journey. I usually also toss a towel over the bucket so they don't get disturbed too much.

Yes crappy small towns... they're just horrible for us "exotic" pet keepers. :-( I see you live in Northern Minnesota! I'm probably just a couple hours away. Grand Portage, Grand Marais and Duluth are all within a short distance. Depending where you are, maybe I should get your LFS to order some habrosus and take em across the border. :hey:

I'm glad to know the disease doesn't spread to other fish. I think I'll take the chance then, get one and hope for the best!!

Has kitty kat said slowly is the way to go,the longer the better, especially more so if the water they come from is different from yours, they need to acclimatise to the temp,ph etc etc..

I've had dwarf gouramis since december, the first male died within a week,so i replaced it and both the male & female seem to be ticking along ok :)

I wouldn't risk buying any fish from a tank that has ill looking or diseased fish whether gourami or otherwise.has you may not know what disease it may be,and may end up wiping your whole tank if not a gourami disease related.

I normally wouldn't either, but I don't have a lot of options. :( In fact, petsmart is the only option. I noticed they only have gourami in that tank though. So maybe that's not mixing any diseases...

Hmm. I'm just about done cycling my tank and was thinking of getting a gourami first and leave him in their a month before adding any other fish. Is this a good idea/enough time to flush out any diseases?
