Hi, I'm having troubles finding a good used aquarium for a decent price. The problem is that it needs to be able to hold a full grown Oscar and all the aquariums I'm finding are no more than 15 inches deep from front to back which will be too small. The pet store has tanks that are the same volume(55 gallons) but different dimensions and they'll be three times as much. Anyone here know where I can find a tank?

If you have somewhere to put it, ie. you don't need a stand - try getting some quotes for a custom.

I've just had one built, and the cost of the tank was about the same as a slightly smaller tank + stand from my lfs.

I think there are a couple of links on the forum (advertisements) - but have a surf around for others.....

I know exactly what your going through. I've looked through the classifieds every week. I go to garage sales in the summer. I look in any pets store I know of but everything is either no available or too expensive. Therefore, I've been looking for 3 years. I just want something for $150 or less, for eveything, including stand. I can't never find that though.

Oh, I forgot to tell you. If you just need something bigger for your Oscar while you look for a real tank I know what you can use in the mean time. I got the idea off of another fish forum. You can use a large 55 gallon rubbermaid bin, or sterlite bin. They are cheap and will do that job untill you find something better. Just put gravel, filter, powerhead(s), and heater in and you're good to go.

A 75 gallon is a pretty common size (48"x18"x20") and if you keep your eyes peeled I imagine that you will find a deal eventually. A 90 gallon (48x18x24) is also pretty common and a great tank for an Oscar. Keeping your options open will help. Take advantage of all your resources - newspaper, classifides paper, the internet (fish forums, ebay, aquabid, etc). I buy all my tanks used, and I know it takes some patience to find what you are looking for at the right price. Also, don't ignore prices out of your range, you'd be surprised how far people come down if they need to get rid of something.

Good luck!

If you live in the North West UK I can point you in the right direction.
