I saw some today labelled as butterfly pl*c at Pets at Home and bad as they are their info displayed on the tank is usually fairly accurate.

They have them labelled as growing to 5cm, but I've had a quick butchers on t'internet and planet catfish.com have them as upto 14cm and others I have looked at have them at upto 10cm :/

Anybody have any idea's or better yet anybody here got one/some?

If they stay small, say 5cm or even 10cm I may well be getting one, but at 14cm they'll be too big for my 60cm tanks

hello

there are various creatures sold in the lfs as "butterfly plec"

two are these are genuine plecs, I believe their L numbers are L052 and L168. That's probably what you saw on planetcatfish. They do reach around 14cm. Here is one (sorry it's so big)

The other thing that is sold as a butterfly plec is not even a catfish, it is somethig known as a hillstream loach (although not technically a loach...!). They're also sold as hong kong plecs and all sorts of other random names. They like cool, fast flowing water so probably wouldnt be suitable for your tank. here is one:

so, do you think either of those is what you saw? If you want more info on the L052, I think Cheese_Specialist has one.

Forget it, I took a photo of the fish and the tank sign with my phone, just read the sign.

It is the hillstream loach and they are sold as coldwater fish, though I've seen a few resources saying they are ok upto about 75f or 24c.

Edit Thanks by the way CD  it was the 2nd one

I'm trying to get my hands on L-168's but it's hard to find them. Apparently though, the plec you're looking for is the fish sold with every name but it's proper one.

I love mine, but I must warn you that the minute you find one and put it into your tank ... that's the last you'll see of it. They're not described as masters of desguise for nothing. B)

I have 5 Khulis in a 10 gallon quarantine tank with only one small decoration for them to hide in and I can only ever find 3 at a time but like Butterflies, I do see them out more often around dusk or when the lights are low. I don't mind if they hide in the day most of the time, though I'll probably set up the tank so I can see them if I wanted to without disturbing their need for shady spaces.
