For fish that grow to over 12inches long, to help find the right sized pond or aquarium you should do this calculation;
a. To find the right length of the tank/pond, it should be at least 4 times the adult maximum length of the fish in question.
b. To find the right width of the tank/pond, it should be at least 2 times the length of the adult maximum length of the fish in question.
(Obviously this calculation is just a rough guide though, as it doesn't take things like activity levels of the fish into question, koi are quite active fish).
Koi do best in ponds of at least 4ft depth, while goldfish do best in ponds of at least 3ft depth.
I'm not sure how long butterfly koi grow to though, they are the same as any other variety of koi except they have been specifically bred for their longer fins- i wouldn't be surpised if they grew a little shorter than standard koi (3ft+ in length), although probably not that much, so i would be prepared to dig a large pond if i were you.
