My African butterfly fish has been acting strangly all day, hiding in bushes whereas he normally hangs out at the surface. When I went to have a look at him he has a large hole in one of his fins.
I added a betta recently. Could he be to blame? He seems much more timid than the butterflys but hes the only new addition.
I've put some melafix into the tank. Is there anything else I should be doing? And will the melafix hurt my elephant nose? He seems ok so far.
Thanks for any advice.

What are your water parameters like Elisabeth?

Melafix should help (personally I rate this product) and its safe for scaleless fish so the nose shold be OK

:)

Thanks WWW, Thats a big relief :)
I got quite worried as just after I put the melafixin the tank I remembered some medications are harmful to scaleless fish.
Water parameters are all good. Butterfly fish back at the surface again so I guess he's feeling a bit better. Hopefuly the hole will heal quickly.

Your betta is definately to blame, male betas will attack anything with bright colouring/fancy finnage that is close to their own size, butterflys look mean but are very fragile fish that are easily stressed id take the betta out and give him his own tank or return him to the fs
