Hello everyone,
I've recently set up a new 25 gal tank, and picked up the following fish.
2 Dalmation Lyretail Mollies - 1 male 1 female
2 Red Wag Platties - Both Male
1 Sunburst Platy - Female
1 Red Gold Tuxedo Guppy - Male
1 Turquoise Guppy - Male
1 Yellow Lyretail Molly (Don't know species) - Female.
Here's the problem: We had asked the store clerk specifically for all male fish as we did not want to have any fry, just fish for show. We figured that males are more colorful and hopefully would get along without females being present. But, accidentally, he gave us 3 females. I didn't know until we got them home and in the tank, where I could take a clearer look. About an hour after getting these guys home, the Male Dalmatian Molly began aggressively harassing the female dalmatian, trying to mate with it. I felt bad for her, so I took her out of the tank intending to return her for a male. As soon as I removed her, the male dalmatian immediately began harassing the Yellow molly female, when he had previously paid no attention to her. I removed her as well, figuring I'll return them both for males. I didn't return the Sunburst Platy, as everyone seems to be leaving her alone.
We brought the two male replacements home and introduced them to the tank. Not long after, the male Dalmatian began harassing the new male dalmatian just as aggressively as the females, now nipping at his genital fins, and still attempting to mate with him!
Thankfully he seems to be only terrorizing the Mollies, and I have him quarantined for now. Without him around, the other fish seem to get along just fine.
Is there anything I can do to curb this aggressive one's libido, or should I return him to the pet store?
Thanks in advance!
