OK so over a while I have figured that it is not the aquarium that is expensive to buy, in general it's the hood and the stand/cabinet.

So.. as I do I was wondering if they are relativly easy to make... Since i'm always trying to save money :p Thanks Matt B

It all depends on the size of tank. I know you can make a stand for a 10g but not sure of anything else because for example a long 20g weighs 200pounds so not sure if wood can hold anything that weights 200 pounds.

If you know carpentry then its a viable possibility but if you are just trying to do it yourself you should get some help. Nailing some boards together might work for awhile but if you don't know what you are doing there is a very good possibility that it could all come crashing down and make a big mess to clean up.

My 30g tank is on a wooden stand.
My dad "made" it or rather he adapted it from some previous incarnation.
Anyway, it is majorly solid, it's lasted about 20 years so far and I reckon will easily last another 20. :D

i used a coffe table haha.....400 pounds on that tiny thing and its still holding on strong and thats tiny wood so im pretty sure you could use wood for alot heavier

It all depends on your skill with carpentry. http://www.garf.org/ has a good program for building a stand. Scroll down the left side to the diy folder.

Hoods aren't that difficult, as they don't have to be a supporting structure as a stand does. I could send you pics of mine I took as I built it if you like.
