In my set up (see sig.) I have a load of hollow resin rocks which means there is little weight. My aim is to create a load of free space on the substrate which my Plecs and Synos can use.

I would like to make a natural looking 'shelf' which would stand around 2" off the substrate then build the rock scape off of that thus creating a haven for the bottom dwellers. However, the 'shelf' mustn't look totally flat nor solid and if possible not too visible under the rocks. As I previously said, the rocks have little weight compared to the real stuff.

It goes without saying that it's construction needs to be aquarium friendly and easily removed for vaccing.

So, anyone have any ideas, all would be appreciated and photos please if anyone has tried this :good:

:drinks: cheers! (back later to check)

Have you considered using egg crate with large holes? That plastic grid stuff.

i used to use slate and rock
to make like a shelf to get the
main body of rocks off the bottom
roofing slate

Would some alkaline rock pillars do the trick of supporting from underneath, combined with a suction cup or two screwed into each fake rock with stainless screws, sucking the structure against the back wall?

...Not too disimilar from what I'm hoping is possible with my new triangular piece of bogwood, albeit I'm trying to suspend it much close to the water surface.

Back wall is 3D Juwel Rock face so no suction available. The rocks I have are not too big individually so when laid down they would need supporting quite closely thus not producing wide spaces that I am after.......thanks though. :good:

Cheers for that.......trouble with a roofing slate is that it is solid. I want food (and fish) to be able to fall and swim through the rock (and shelf) to access the substrate

Best idea thus far for my needs (and I had thought of it) just wanted to see if there were any other ideas people had tried :good:
