Building a Marine tank

Hi all,

I will be building a glass tank probably 5ft ish and was wondering where to put the intake for the sump.

I see in shops a vertical pipe for the overflow intake (hole in the bottom of the tank). I'm thinking it would be a disaster if the seal needed replacing.

Therefore I'm thinking a hole or two in the side of the tank for overflow, which would allow maintanance, and wouldn't be a disaster if the seal leaked.

Is there any problems with the overflow being at the side??

what has everyone else got?

I'd go through the base. The reason for this is that the water level can be adjusted and having the holes through the side may be noisy. both will work though.
