I am doing a major makeover on a 100USG tank (54" x 24" x 18")
Due to requiring a stand which was high enough to accomodate 2x Fluval 405 I have had to make one from scratch.
My objective is to make make a visually pleasing piece of furniture as this is going to be my Display tank in my dining room.
My aim is to do this on a tight budget - the cheaper the better. Therefore I will be using all available resources I can find.
First things first I had to get a picture in my mind of what I wanted the finished article to look like. So I spent quite a few hours and trips out looking at large fish tank stands and large pieces of furniture.
I eventually got a vision in my mind of a light coloured solid wood cabinet (to match in with dining room floor). The idea is to make the tank and stand be part of the dining room furniture.
As you can see from the tank dimensions it is going to be a large bit of furniture
The stand must be made with materials and in a way to bear an extreme amount of weight ( the tank when complete will be carrying upto a 100kg of rockwork plus water and fish)
Therefore the framework for the stand was made from 3" x 2" wood with loads of cross braces.I also placed a shelf in at one end. The bottom of the frame and shelf were made from a piece of laminated chipboard I had in storage. The cost of the frame was £18.75 for the timber from a well known DIY centre.

As you can see the famework alone is quite substantial and heavy to lift but very solid :good:
To create te cabinet I now decided to use reclaimed kitchen unit doors( £1 per door 8 in total 3 for back to be permanently attached for eveen more added strengh - All the doors were in light oak (see pic)

which has required me to strip them and I will then lime them to make them even lighter (see pic)

The whole thing is coming together now - my arms are dropping off from sanding  but the plan is coming together

omg that is amazing work!! you have some skill with wood!! this already is looking awesome! :good:

can i ask where you got the reclaimed doors from? hoping to find something similar around here all of a sudden...

ah had been hoping there may be some form of scrap yards for kitchen units available in the uk that i hadnt heard a term for lol. might pop down the local recycling centre and see if there is old furniture that could be cannibalised.

Good idea - its always a good idea to keep in with the workers there you never know what they may find

the last time i was there they had a large amount of 70's furniture that just isn' keeping in with our Ikea life style lol but I know they have a seperate "office" warehouse that will have more up to date furniture board styled wood.

Remember if the wood is solid it will always strip down to whatever look/colour you want.
That is what I have been doing - my arms are falling off from sanding  but the effect is worth it in the end.

Ironically I would love to do it in real wood, but it would be the only thing made from real wood with the exception of the windows haha

Top is on the stand now - made from matchboard (£8) all I've got to do is finish and hang the doors - pics to follow

Massively impressed with that. Good work. You've got me thinking that maybe I should build my own sideboard rather than try and find one that 'hopefully' takes the weight... Did your local DIY shop cut up all the wood to size for you?

Great job you've done there, looks strong enough for the job that's for sure. Does look strange with the handle still fitted to the side though

I've been thinking about making one myself for sometime now out of wood and seeing yours has given me the push to go for it.

Cracking job! :good:

Would look strange without it :good:
The front is false = due to size of tank bieng positioned in dining room - dining table stopss easy access to front - both sides open to reveal filters and the other aquatic equipment and are easily accessible :good:

congratulations on a great job done :good: wished i was that good at wood work but i suck big time at it.

is there any updated pics with the tank on it?
