i have 6 BA tetra in my tank, not sure of sex. one has recently got quite fat, and im not sure whether its pregnant or ill.

firstly, i dont know how to sex them, and cant find much info. body shape is apparantly a good indicator, but because its abnormally fat i have no idea what it used to look like, if you see what i mean. the only thing that stands out particuarly is its fins have more obvious white tips than the others in the tank.

its been getting fat for nearly a couple of weeks, if it was getting ill i would have expected more obvious signs by now, but its acting totally normal, no pineconing, eating and swimming normally. all my stats are good, regular waterchanges etc.

ill get a photo tomorrow if i can.

but basically -

how do you sex them ?
how long would one be pregnant before laying ?

I imagine they are like most other cyprinids, the female will be slightly broader under the belly and possibly larger in size, but if they are juveniles then you probably wont be able to tell the difference. They don't get pregnant. A female might swell with eggs but she wouldn't look overly pregnant

right ok then, possibly getting ill then, i shall keep an eye on things. in a different tank an odessa barb got drospy, and got fat, pineconed, and died within a week. its been 2 weeks almost, no signs of illness or behaviour change, a mystery.
