I have a 5 year old budgie who has his cage open all day so he can come out whenever he wants. Today he has just discovered my freshwater tank and he keeps flying over and sitting on the side. Now you're probably thinking just get a lid but it's not as simple as that as I have a light canopy plus the shape of the tank isn't like the average shape tanks, it's curved. So getting a lid isn't a option. We're worried that the water might do him some harm if he drinks it or he might do harm to the water if he poops in it. Anyone got any ideas on how to stop him other than locking him in his cage all day?? Maybe put something along the edge of the tank to stop him standing there?? Any ideas??

In which case I would recommend making a lid for the tank, or getting someone to. I have budgies and fish and I understand your dilemma, but I don't think there's another way round it. The budgie can't really stay in the cage without exercise.

Making a lid is going to be hard to do so that's why I thought of putting something on the side to stop him but I'm trying to think what I can put there...lol.

How about covering the top with some sort of netting? I guess you'd have to be careful so you don't end up with a tangled budgie though! Perhaps you could try to make the edge of the tank uncomfortable to land on (thinking city council pigeon defenses :shifty: )

maybe do some fancy DIY with some plastic or acrylic as a temporary lid for when he's loose?

I was thinking something like that but decided against it in case it was something that could hurt him so I've been trying to think of something I can just attach to the side that will scare him from going near the tank. He's been fine the last few hours and hasn't gone near it at all so I'm hoping he's got the idea that he's not allowed there.

Get a cat - cat's love to sit on fish tanks, birds are scared of cats, voila! Only kidding...

You can get fly screening by the metre on Ebay in the pet section, it's like metal mesh but flexible (apparently), you could just cut it to size and make a little frame for it?
