Hi all!

I'm thinking of getting another pet...

I was thinking of a parrot, but they are way to expensive IMO, so a budgie is the next bet.

A few questions though, i have kept a total of 3 when i was younger, but i didnt really handle them... so they werent that tame.

Questions are;-
-can they talk?
-can/will they be tame eventually with regular handling?
-can they do tricks like parrots? (like picking up things when asked to etc) or bird puzzles?

Thanks :good:

yes they can

Very tame

Well, I suppose you could train their natural behviour, they will certainly pick up things

Get a pair though, I hate sociable birds like budgies living on their own, so sad

the kinds of things you want the bird to do, imo I think a cockatiel would suit.

They can learn to talk, but like budgies it isnt as simple as getting a parrot to talk. it takes alot longer as they dont have the same intelligence.

to be fair - I have never heard of a talking budgie

also, if you have more than one budgie - youre not needed in their eyes as they have a friend. a cockatiel is better as you can have one and therefore you become its friend

but buy from a breeder whether it be a budgie or cockatiel or any kind of bird - shop bought birds are shy and not very tame

Wish you could hear my ex mother-in-laws budgie, it used to swear like a trooper.

I believe Haych might be right about the talking, if you get two they might be less likely to talk. However, said MIL did have two, one spoke and the other didn't, they were very tame, one used to drink her tea, didn't ever seem to do it any harm

They had a lot of freedom, used to fly all over the house and boy did she love those birds

thanks guys!
still thinking, now im thinking about getting alfie a friend! which will be a nightmare, as rabbits are hard to bond!

I brought a beautiful blue budgie about 3 years ago... Only had it for about 3 hours tho as my mom didn't want anymore pets. So i gave it to my nan! But found out yesterday that it's died :-( really sad i never got to say bye....
My other nan has one 2 but hers talks - (Well it says "what ya doing").
Really nice birds!!!.

seffies right one budgie isnt to kind on the little birds, same with cockateils they live in flocks of thousands
budgies will talk and Ive heard males are the better mimics

what you could do with is a handreared bird budgie or cockateil that is imprinted on humans

Budgies are awesome, I used to have one and it would talk, it could say "spongebob square pants" and of course it would swear often also, it was hilarious at Christmas though!

Hmm thanks for the repies all! :)

Now, im thinking of a budgie or a cockatiel... (there more in my budget  )

The LPS, breeds there own bird stock so thats good! :) I will see if they have any cockatiels in stock. :)

thanks again! :good:

Budgies are great! I bred them years ago, kept a beautiful young male that I taught to talk, he caught on suprisingly quickly but I did have a lot of time to spend with him repeating words over and over, he was called Bobby and I got him to say 'who's a pretty boy bobby' 'give us a kiss' and 'what are you doing'? it was hilarious, he also wolf whistled! if you are going to be away for long periods it's best to get two, they don't have to be male and female though, two males will be fine but it's best to get them young, they may as others have said not take to talking so readily though if they have each other to chat to, females can also be taught to talk but are not as good as males and they can also be a bit more nippy.
Remember any bird you get needs to be a youngster for you to be able to train it effectively and also ideally male, goodluck in your quest and let us know what you go for in the end
