Hi

My tank has been running for 8 days now. I had a bit of an algea bloom saturday, but not really worried about that. What I want to know is, is it normal for the gravel to produce bubbles? I dont mean the bubbles you get when you first set it up, but my gravel actually seems to be producing bubbles, similar to how plants 'pearl' in a FW aquarium.

Water tests are all fine and the only thing different to my sig is 1 hitchicking crab (nasty looking beast with red legs and dark blue claws that appear to be serrated on the outside) and just installed a backup filter (external eheim 2234).

Sounds like oxygen bubbles, produced by the algae during photosynthesis.

An alternative is nitrogen being released by denitrifying bacteria but i doubt your system is mature enough to be this.

Both are harmless.

ahhh so it is pearling hehe, thought that might be it, as the algea on the rocks is doing the same.

lol its absaluitely nothing to be worried about. It's just a part of the aging cycle. Before I jumped into the marine section of this hobby I never did cycles. Never affected the fish any at all, they all live to their extent. But with starting my own marine tank, I'm taking extra precaution and I'm going to cycle it for about 2 weeks or maybe a month.

Although this is a normal thing, be aware it might be the start of a diatom or cyano bloom. Again this is normal ina new tank but its a signal of high nutrients (normal in a new tank as nutrients are fluctuating).

Is there something I should do about it? I am running rowaphos in the filter. Or should I just let it sort itself?

Thanks

Jon

At the moment i doubt there is anything that can be done. THe tank is new and this is a totally nomral part of the maturing process. Diatoms will use up silicates in the tank and sometimes a cyano bloom will occur also. If you can increase the circulation and flow across the effected areas then you might get a better result. for now though i would let it run its course and see how it developes.
