I've noticed that my platies, only when they come up to the top to eat blow bubbles from their gills. Is this normal???

As they are gulping floating fodd, they take in a bit of air and it passes out through the gills, no worries as long as they only do it when feeding. If they are gulping at the surface all the time - then you've got trouble.
