I got a male betta last week and he's doing great. But over the week he's developed what looks like spit floating on the top of his water, around the edge of the bowl. I wasn't sure what this was? I had to clean his bowl, so I got rid of it, but it seems to be developing again. Anyone have any ideas? My other tank has guppies and other community fish and I have never developed that stuff in their tank.
:dunno:

haha that's funny. you're doing a good job with your little guy. he made you a bubble nest to show you that he's happy

it is a bubblenest male bettas do this quite often, signs of happiness and ready to breed.
they do this so that iff the male breeds with the female he turns the female upside down so that when she releases the eggs they float into the bubblenest and thats where the eggs will hatch the male will keep an eye on the eggs for sometime, like if an egg falls to the bottom he will go down and put it back in the nest he will do this to the babys when they hatch because they will try and escape but the male is trying to keep them safe. :D

Don't worry, it's a bubblenest and a very good thing! Good on you for caring about him so much.

Male bettas (and some females) make bubblenests as a sign they are happy, healthy and willing to breed. Sometimes they are a mass of bubbles bunched together but sometimes they are scattered around the edges of the tank/bowl, which is what your bettas' sounds like.

But if your betta doesn't make a bubblenest it doesn't mean he is sick or depressed. I have a male who bubblenested non-stop for a week when I got him, then stopped. He acted just the same but didn't blow bubbles. But then I put my cute little female next to him and whammo, BIG bubblenest the next morning. I think he just thought that after a while of me having him, 'Aaaw, she's not gonna let me breed... I won't waste time building nests then!' But when I placed Pearls' tank next to his, he changed his mind. :hey: :p

So it sounds like you have a very happy and healthy betta there! :) Congrats!

I've had George for a couple of months. His first bubblenest appeared yesterday. None from Barracuda yet...
