It could be brown algae, and can be caused by a number of things...

- Overfeeding is a major cause
- Not enough light (otherwise it would be green)
- Not enough water changes

You can just take things out and clean them and then address whatever the cause may be.
 
OMG what is that avtar cheese specialist!! I feels scared but glad I dont remember the 80's :rofl:

*edit* but seriously it could also be bacteria forming in the substrate.
 
:fish: Do you stir your sand when you clean the tank?
If you use a wine brewing syphon it has a narrow tube and you do not remove too much of the sand. :D When you empty the bucket of dirty tank water, do it slowly and the sand will stay in the bottom of the bucket. :) Save this up until you have enough to make it worth washing then return it to the tank after a thorough clean with lots of fresh water. :D
