Brown Hermit

i have a blue legged hermit and i recently did a water change. a day after the water change i saw the hermit at the back of the tank, its legs brown and it was not moving. i picked it up and moved it to the front of the tank and it still has not moved. is this the crab shedding or is it dead?

It could be either.

Crab molt normally falls apart very easily when disturbed and when studied carefully you can tell that the body is empty. Try picking the shell up and pulling the crab from it. If the crab disappears into the shell it's probably still alive otherwise do the check as above.
