USA,
it wont go away! Is there any chemical I can use to remove it that wont harm live plants?

Did you try increasing the amount of light in your tank? You never said how many watts per gallon you have.

Otos might help eat some of the brown stuff but I haven't heard of any chemical you can add.

20 watts. Also, i cant add ottos, because in less than 1 month i am converting the tang to a tanganyikan shell dweller tank.

Would a pleco be okay w/shellies?

20 watts in how big a tank?
If your tank is larger than 15 gallons you probably need to upgrade your lighting to get rid of the brown stuff.

I don't think plecos will eat brown algae/diatoms.

I would always have problems with brown algae in my tanks back when I had very low light and my common plec would always completely take care of the brown algae in about 2 weeks. :D I'm not an expert, that's just my personal opinion.

One more thing, I really really don't recommend that you upgrade your lighting unless you have live plants (Fish don't really need a lot of light) It will be 10x harder to get rid of all the other type of algae that will come up in a tank with more light if not properly taken care of from the beginning. :/

Thanks for clearing that up FishSticks. I've never had a pleco so I wasn't sure about them eating the brown algae. :)

well i do have live plants.

and i stole my brothers pleco, and it got rid of most the algea over night!

if you really want to go the chemical route
I'd recomend eSHa protalon-707
it really is the best, IMHO, for killing algea
(not sure it is available in the states though)
