Brown Algae

my tank is still fairly new onluy about 2 months old but i have this aweful brown algae issue. i clean my rocks and sand every day to get rid of it but with the light on a hour later the brown algae is back. i have turned my lights back an hour both actinic and the main light...what else can be done? i also do my weekly 5 gallon water change (i have a 40 gallon tank)

i was told to reduce the photo period, to around 5 hours a day, and then slowly after a week or two, bring it up an hour each day. however, i think that its just a cycling issue, my tank is 2 months old also, i never reduced my photoperiod, i just rocked it out.

did you use tap water?
