Speaking from experiance and from what ive read. On the contry to your last reply you do not need more light. When i first started keeping fish i had the same problem i cleaned the tank it came back, i cleaned, it came back. I then purchessed some brown sucking loaches. I woke the next morning it had all gone i was amazed ive never had it since. Brown algae commonly appears in new tank set ups. Have your water tested and if ok go get some fish.

If your tank is in the first month or so of being set up it is probably a diatom algae bloom. I got warned about that when I started mine! It goes absolutely crazy for a bit, then seems to calm itself down again.

If it is a long term problem, maybe a snail would help? Since I became infested with baby snails from a plant, I have a snail problem rather than an algae problem.
