Just been away for a couple of days, when I got back I noticed brown algae/growth on the back wall and on the top of my LR.

Its at the back of my tank where I recently changed the standard T8 tube to a marine white 25W 9500K tube, with reflector. I also the lights on time to 10 hours.

Its very flat like dirty brown marks, not bushy or hair-like.

Anyone know what it is? Should I turn the lights on time back down to 8 hours?

Thanks,

Light timing wont matter. Sounds more like cyanobacteria to me. How old is the tank? Can you take a pic?

how old is your system? most if not all systems have an algae cycle...
Ter
hahah well.. I hate when that happens SkiFletch your 2 fast!

Yeah I'll try and post a pic in a few minutes.

Tank is about 4 weeks, with only LR in it. Levels are almost perfect to start adding CUC.

The reason I mentioned the lights is that it has only appeared when I changed the tube. Its actually on the back wall (only in places where it gets light) and on the top of the highest bits of LR. Its only on the bits under the new 9500K tube aswell. I also increased the lights on time at the same time.

Tank is 4 weeks old and you have a brown light loving algae? Diatoms, almoast certainly. Get some cleanup crew in there as soon as the chemistry's set and they'll clean up the rocks. You may have to scrape the glass cause they will do an imperfect job at cleaning it, but they'll keep the rocks clear of diatoms thats for sure ;)

Diatoms eh? Thanks for the info as always. CUC will be going in after holiday to NY for New Year.

Here are some pics:-

Diatoms for sure. Where in NY are you going? I assume you mean NYC?

Oooh, very nice. If I may make 1 suggestion about new years and NYC... If you really want to see the ball drop in times square, dress WARM (multiple layers) and be prepared to stand outside from around 3pm till midnight and have a thick bladder ;). The square fills up by 4-5pm and they stop letting people in eventually, so a heads up for that. I did it once just to say that I've done it, but I'll prolly never do it again.

This is actually the first year that I haven't spent new years in the city in a long time. Anyway you slice it though you'll have a great time :D

Yeah we read up on Times Square, and decided it didn't sound like a good idea. We've booked into the Bar/Club Capitale instead.

Cheers,
