Hi,

I am currently 11 days into cycling my new tank and I added some Ammonia on the 7th day once I read up on how to do a 'fishless' cycle. 2 quick beginner questions:

1) There is a brown like moss substance growing on my Bogwood and it is getting worse each day. Is this algae? If so, is this normal at this stage and should I be trying to clean it off?
2) Also, I have a Rena air filter and this is very quiet. However, the airstone is extremely noisy and it is this (not the air pump) which is making my tank set up unbearably noisy. Is there anything other than an airstone that anyone can reccommend that is quieter? E.g. air curtain etc..

Do you leave your lights on a lot? If so, try cutting back on the light.

What kind of airstone do you have? Is it touching the glass?

I leave the lights on for a couple of hours a night...is that a lot?

airstone is not touching the glass

I've read that brown algae can be caused by NOT ENOUGH light. Maybe you need to leave your lights on longer than just a couple of hours.

Getting brown algae (diatoms) in a new tak is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, it'll clear up.
