Brown Algae

I know there has been some discussion lately on the brown algae...but, I just noticed it in my daughter's tank and my own...what is it? where is it coming from? and how do I get rid of it?
I have live plants in my tank and fake in daughter's...
any info would be greatly appreciated.

Brown algae is usually due to insufficient light or lenght of lighting period....

What lighting and period do you use?

Between 10-12 hours is suitable for most plants....

I have flourescent lighting in both tanks...I turn them on right after we wake- usually around 6:30-7:00 and they will stay on until we go to bed...so, that is probably way too long, ey?
Not keeping them on so long- that will help? How do I go about getting rid of it...it doesn't seem to be bothering any of the fish- just me!
