Hi I've had my 240 litre tank set up since March and added fish in April. I have 15 juvenile fish now and usual readings are normal amm - 0 nitrites - 0 Nitrates < 20 I do weekly water changes of 25% and syphon the gravel. I don't think I'm overfeeding, the fish are eating within a minute or so and always appear hungry at feeding. At first I was getting some green algae and cyanbacteria (I think was more bluey green) but the last 2 weeks brown algae is going berserk all over the tank. I read it can be to do with silicates? what's the best way to tackle it? I have just added a few live plants could that trigger something?

Just had this in mine, From what i read a new tank (mine is 8weeks old) will go through this and it will clear it self up. All i did was cut my lights by 1 hour (now on 7Hrs) and i skip 1 day feeding sometimes 2 evey weeks seems to have cleared up over night for me

My tank also had a serious brown algae outbreak at about 2 months. Went away by itself after a couple weeks. You will probably have to rub it off of your plants leaves or they won't get enough light.

It's not to do with silicates it's to do with trace levels of ammonia fluctuating in a new tank, it's pretty common in new set ups and should go away on its own, but if it's bothering you then you can reduce your photo-period and increase circulation around the tank.
