we have had goldfish (four small fantails) for the last year and a half, we have always had massive problems with brown algae, just presumed that it was the old tank, and the poor lighting, so we bought a new larger tank to accomodate the fishies. six months on, and the algae problem is as bad as it ever was, our weekly water change is no longer a simple third out third in, clean the filter, 20 min and job done; it is now a third in, scrub EVERYTHING, and then replace the third.. taking over an hour each time.. nightmare..! the goldies are in a standard rena aquarama (80 litres), with a fluval 3+ filter, and rena 100 air pump (and standard 18W tube.. (daylight tube i think))!

what is up with it.. why do we keep getting so much algae!!

we have tried plants, but the goldies just chewed the £10 of plants in three days! any plants that are goldie proof!??

thanks for any help!

I have tried live plants with my goldfish and they didn't eat the java fern or elodea densa, vallis has been ok I just see them every now and again nibbling at it. They seem to eat the java moss the most but because it grows back so quickly it is still alive 3 months later.

There is a guide in the planted section and it says that anubias is not eaten by fish so you could try that.

Hope this helps

Have you tried something like snails? They multiply like rabbits by themselves, so you will have to start getting rid of them Just try to find some that can stand the colder temps
