I got a new fish for my monster tank
Channa ara ❤️‍🔥
Well you might have never heard about this sp.
It is genetically close relative of bullseye snakehead but this sp. is an endemic species to sri lanka

They're big fish - illegal to import in North America.

I've never seen the fascination with keeping massive fish 🤷‍♀️ most can't be kept comfortably in aquaria so it's just a bit cruel in my opinion. Nice looking fish though

Well you're right by your angle of view bcz not all people like the monster fish category 🙂

Me as a monster fish lover what's fascinating about them is their aggressive nature, their behavior, appearance ... things like this makes keeping them thrilling and exiting more than other fish types (for me)☺️
But I also like planted tanks, paludariums ,nano fish and aquatic invertebrates too

And don't worry
This tank is a 100 gallon and this fish is only about 5"
When he get bigger I'm gonna add him to my pond 😉☺️

Beautiful fish.
Did you buy it, get given it or catch it? The bag water looked green.
How big will it get?
Does it have any tank mates?
Also what is the reason for adding meth blue?

Thanks ❤️
I brought it ,water is green bcz the tank he was before (pre owners tank) had green algae it it
Size-They get about 3ft+ in length
Tank mates -Yes 2jaguars, 2blue acaras, 1eel and 1angelfish
Meth blue -To ensure that he doesn't have any external diseases, which could potentially infect the other fish

Our October Fish of the Month contest will be for "any fish" but we are especially seeking "oddballs." Your Channa Ana would definitely qualify. Hope you enter it in the contest. Entry period will start in the middle of this month.

I noticed you weren't in North America, but given the shortage of Asian members writing in English here, I figured you wouldn't get a lot of informed discussion here. Snakeheads were getting a lot of interest before the smuggling of the one illegal species ruined it for all in a big chunk of the English speaking world (how can border guards be expected to recognize juveniles of each species). I saw some great looking Channa sp before then, even though monster fish hold no interest for me in tanks.

Often when we keep 'weird' fish, that "oh it's pretty" response is frustrating. We want to talk about our fish.

In Scotland they’re all illegal. In England, which is slightly warmer on average because it’s slightly further south, only C. argus is illegal.
I would love a tank big enough to keep them. Some of them are among the most beautiful fish, imo. C. orientalis, one of my favourites, is doable as a pair in a half full 6x2x2, since it only gets to about 4”. But next to zero market for the fry, which prevents me from doing it.

Before the bans, a friend had Channa bleheri, and they were fascinating to watch. I support the ban because the fish industry and ethics... well, there's a weakness. It's too bad though, as they are wondrous creatures. I get, and support why they're banned, but I also can see why people in their native ranges would appreciate them.

Oh really
I'll definitely enter 😉
I think you misspelled
It's C.ara not ana ☺️

C.oretalis is another endemic sp. to my country 😇
I had one too
Caught him when really small and I released him back when he was big and old enough to mate

I'm not just keeping fish as a hobby
I'm into ichthyology(dreaming if becoming an ichthyologist)
So learning anything about any fish(except genetically modified fish, I hate them)feels good to me 😊

Orientalis are my favourite too I had a pair about 15 years ago which I used to show on here with fry etc. I've tried to find them since but they seem to be non existent in the UK which is odd as so easy to breed and raise the fry

Did you mean to say 6 x 2 as that seems far too big for a pair of Orientalis I think I had mine in a 3' which was plenty big enough as they're not the most active of fish
